Parchment letters and hanging seals

The museum's collection of written documents (about 130,000 items) chronologically embraces the period from the 12th century to the end of the 20th century. Its contents were brought over from the archives of numerous Novgorod monasteries, institutions and associations operating in pre-revolutionary Russia, from private archives of statesmen, scientists, artists and restorers.

The oldest original copies of Russian written documents stand apart in the collection, such as the charter issued by prince Mstislav Vladimirovich and his son Vsevolod to the Yuriev monastery in 1130 and a letter by Varlaam of Khutyn (1192).

The collection is partially displayed atthe exposition "History of Novgorod and the Novgorod Region", located in the building of the former Public Offices on the Kremlin territory in Novgorod.
